I am getting an ME2 mp3 player. What does it mean to backup and format the player before you put songs on? Is it necessary, And how do I do this?

If you havent put anything on it yet then there is nothing to backup. Formating will wipe the memory clean and get it ready to use with the device you are using it for.
Go ahead and do it. Right click the player in windows explorer and you should see format. Do a quick simple format.
